Dental implants are a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. A small titanium implant is placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root, supporting a crown, bridge or denture.


Many adults with missing teeth may be suitable for implants. During your consultation, we will assess your teeth, gums, general health and bone levels, using appropriate scans or X-rays where required. If there is not enough bone to securely support an implant, bone grafting may sometimes be recommended.

What Types of Dental Implants Are Available?

For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth, implants can also be used to support a full-arch restoration or help stabilise a removable denture. Implant-supported dentures can provide greater stability when eating and speaking compared with conventional dentures.



Implants are not the only option for replacing missing teeth. Depending on your individual needs, alternatives may include bridges, partial dentures or full dentures. We will discuss the appropriate options with you before you decide on treatment.

How Long Does Dental Implant Treatment Take?

Dental implant treatment takes place in stages. Following your consultation and assessment, the implant is carefully placed into the jawbone and given time to heal. During this period, osseointegration takes place, where the surrounding bone forms a stable connection with the implant. Once healing is complete, the final crown, bridge or other restoration can be fitted.



Treatment time varies depending on your individual circumstances, including your bone levels, healing and whether additional treatment such as bone grafting is required.


For this reason, West Grove Dental does not offer or advertise “one-day implants.” While immediate treatment may be appropriate in selected cases elsewhere, we take a carefully planned approach that allows appropriate time for healing before progressing to the final restoration.

Dental Implant Aftercare and How Long Implants Last.

Dental implants can last for many years when they are well maintained, although their lifespan varies between patients. Good oral hygiene, healthy gums, regular dental examinations and professional hygiene care are important for their long-term success.


You can — and should — continue to have regular hygiene appointments with dental implants. Although an implant cannot develop tooth decay, the gums and bone surrounding it still require careful cleaning and monitoring.



Following implant placement, we will provide personalised recovery and aftercare instructions and continue to monitor your implant, surrounding gums and overall oral health at future appointments.

  • 1. Are dental implants painful?

    Dental implants are placed using local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. You may experience some tenderness or swelling afterwards, but this can usually be managed with appropriate pain relief. We will explain what to expect before treatment and provide clear aftercare advice. We do offer sedation for those suitable. 

  • 2. How will I know if I am suitable for dental implants?

    Suitability is not based on age alone. Factors such as your general health, oral health, smoking, medications and ability to maintain good oral hygiene can all influence whether implant treatment is appropriate. A full assessment allows us to consider these factors individually before recommending treatment.

  • 3.How long will I be without a tooth during implant treatment?

    You will not necessarily be left with a visible gap while your implant heals. Depending on the area being treated and your individual circumstances, a temporary tooth replacement may be possible. This will be discussed as part of your treatment planning so you know what to expect throughout each stage.

  • 4. How long does recovery take after a dental implant?

    Many patients are able to return to their normal routine relatively quickly following straightforward implant placement. Initial tenderness and swelling usually settle as the area heals, although recovery varies depending on the procedure and whether additional treatment has been required. Your clinician will advise you when to return to normal eating, cleaning and other activities.
